The swelling of the buds indicates that the start of the 2013 winegrowing season is imminent
2013-04-06 Week 14
Slightly more growth despite the cool overcast conditions.
2013-04-15 Week 15
Lot's of nice warm weather moved the vines along a bit last week
2013-04-21 Week 16
We're expecting the warm weather (70s-80s) to continue into this week
2013-04-28 Week 17
80 degree temps earlier in the week pushed the vines along. Clusters abound... We're expecting more high 70's / low 80's this week.
2013-05-06 Week 18
Record highs last week further accelerated vegetative growth. Very welcomed cooling trend coming this week.
2013-05-12 Week 19
Temperatures cooled down quite a bit last week falling more in line with historical averages. There is considerable flowering out at Fedrick Vineyard (warmer site) and only spots of occurrences at Robert's Road Vineyard (cooler site)
2013-05-19 Week 20
It was a typically warm and sunny week in Sonoma last week. Boring, but boring is good in farming. Solar Radiation (Est. ~600 Ly/Day) info is missing due to Petaluma weather station issues. We were assured that it will be back shortly.
2013-05-26 Week 21
It was quite windy last week. Windy conditions during flowering create a challenging environment for fruit set, which reduces yields. Bloom was well underway before the winds came but we will be closely examining fruit set to estimate yields. Stay tuned.
2013-06-02 Week 22
Warm dry conditions continue. Fruit set looks pretty good and not adversely affected by last week's windy conditions and spot precipitation.
2013-06-09 Week 23
Fruit set finished under warm sunny conditions this week. The young clusters are looking good. We'll examine for coulure (gaps where no berries have formed) next week.
2013-06-15 Week 24
It was not as windy, warm and bright as in week 23 due to cool and cloudy conditions at the beginning of the week. Leaves and secondary shoots have been removed from the north side of the vines (opposite side from the photo) to increase airflow through the fruit zone and increase light reaching the clusters.
2013-06-22 Week 25
Conditions continued like those of week 24 with the exception of higher solar radiation this week. Harvest is shaping up to be an early one this year.
2013-07-01 Week 26
Some rare, but welcomed, rains kicked off an overall hot week even under diminished sunlight and slightly humid conditions. We're still on schedule for an early harvest this year.
2013-07-07 Week 27
We averaged warmer and sunnier conditions this week over last.
2013-07-14 Week 28 Winegrowing Update
Compared to last week, we had a slight cooling trend this week in the Petaluma Gap with a bit less accumulated sunlight. Slightly higher humidity was balanced› by higher wind speeds in the region. I met with the Sangiacomo’s last week to discuss cluster thinning which will occur in a week or so. Everything looks great and we are still expecting an early harvest.
2013-07-21 Week 29 Winegrowing Update
The cooling trend continued this week and the marine layer is now lingering until mid morning diminishing total sunlight and increasing humidity. Wind in the region remained on par with averages.
2013-07-28 Week 30 Winegrowing Update
We experienced a continual decrease in total sunlight over the past few weeks. Temperatures and wind speeds rose slightly compared to last week under drier conditions.
2013-08-04 Week 31 Winegrowing Update
This week we saw cooler temperatures with slightly more sunlight. Humidity and wind conditions were similar to last week.
2013-08-12 Week 32 Winegrowing Update
Temperatures remained on par with last week under more humid and slightly windier conditions. The total amount of sunlight is decreasing as the season progresses.
2013-08-17 Week 33 Winegrowing Update
2013-08-25 Week 34 Winegrowing Update
Temperatures remained warm under slightly drier and windier conditions. As the days become shorter, total sunlight is diminishing. We’ll be sampling the fruit on Tuesday.
2013-09-02 Week 35 Winegrowing Update
Temperatures were considerably warmer under more humid and windier conditions. Total sunlight exceed the amount experienced last week. Early fruit sampling indicated that we are still a couple of seeks away from picking either the Pinot Noir or the Chardonnay at Roberts Road Vineyard.
2013-09-08 Week 36 Winegrowing Update
The cool start of the week gave way to high temps in the 90s. Humidity, wind and sunlight levels were all lower last week.
2013-09-15 Week 37 Winegrowing Update
The previous week’s mini heat wave carried warm temperatures into the beginning of last week. Temperatures began to cool off by mid week under humid, windy conditions.
2013-09-22 Week 38 Winegrowing Update
It was cooler and less humid last week. We brought in the remainder of the Chardonnay before the 0.6” that fell on Friday/Saturday. The Pinot Noir will be picked this week.
2013-09-29 Week 39 Winegrowing Update
It was cooler, sunnier and less humid than the previous week. We picked the last of our Pinot Noir on Thursday. Our first successful vintage is in the books! Can’t wait to share the wines with all of you next fall.
